All things bookish!

I haven’t actually finished any books in the week past and am still reading D H Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers alongside Karen Armstrong’s The Bible.  These are both Kindle books and am fast discovering that I’d rather hold the Kindle and read than hold a book.  I feel very guilty about this but really cannot help myself!

This week’s incomers are:

  1. Sheila Bridge – How to Feel Good Naked
  2. Sue Gerhardt – The Selfish Society
  3. Marc Fitten – Valeria’s Last Stand
  4. Karen Armstrong – Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life

My card-index system wasn’t really working for me so I’ve started to put my collection back on LibraryThing.  This will be a slow process.  But it does give me the opportunity to cull and will help me avoid duplicates in the collection.  I’m thinking I may take the order books are entered into the database for the order in which I will read although obviously library books and review copies will come first (along with anything I feel I really need to read right away – like Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life!)

The plan for the week ahead is a lot of studying as I’ve fallen behind (for personal reasons) but I’d like to finish Sons and Lovers.  I’m enjoying it up to a point but there are lots of characters I really don’t like and, as this group includes the main protagonist, it’s not an easy read.  The descriptive passages are beautiful and I’m intrigued by some of the religious concepts Lawrence has introduced and that’s enough to keep me going.  I’m about half way through but it’s all taking a lot longer than I expected.  I think I prefer Lawrence the poet to Lawrence the novelist.

  1. I read Sons and Lovers ages ago. I think it is time I went back to so many of the classics and read them again. I think I will enjoy it more from an older perspective.

I’m finding it quite heavy going – there’s no way I’d have got through it as a younger reader.

  2. Those are all new titles to me. Enjoy reading! Here’s my Mailbox for this week.

  3. ‘Sons and Lovers’… not sure it’s my cup of tea but I’ll have to be reading it for one of my challenges. Look forward to your thoughts on it.

  4. I have my books on Library Thing and I keep a spreadsheet and still end up with duplicates every once in a while! Enjoy your new books – I’ve heard Valeria’s Last Stand is a good one.

  5. I am interested to hear you say that you like holding the Kindle more than the physical book 🙂 I still haven’t bought an e-reader, and that is one of my biggest apprehensions, that I will miss the feel of the book.

I don’t really have a running account of all the books I’ve read. Just last year, I started using the Goodreads shelf function to keep track of what I read in 2010, and will do so again in 2011.

  6. I would love to use an online site to keep track of my books. DO you think Library thing is the way to go? It would be so much work….LOL 🙂

LibraryThing is the best I’ve found so far, Sheila. I’m adding my books bit by bit (trying to do 10 a day). Have had lots of false starts, realising part way through cataloguing them that what I’d set up wouldn’t really work for me. It’s trial and error, I think, until you find what works for you.

  7. I keep track on Goodreads (for about 4 years). It works for me. I tend to agree (and feel a little guilty) that I like holding my Kindle instead of a paper book. I still buy paper books but prefer the ereader – never expected that!

I tried GoodReads for a while, Mary, but didn’t really like it. I didn’t expect to prefer the Kindle reading experience either but most surely do! Why do I feel such a traitor though? I’m still buying books and reading them so …?

  8. I love reading on my reader — it’s light and super fast for me to work thru — but I feel guilty as well!

Also, I adore Karen Armstrong with my whole body but haven’t read the Compassionate Life one — I look forward to your review!

  9. I think I would like to read Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life! I just love Library Thing. 🙂 Here’s my Mailbox! ~ Wendi

  10. I think that 12 Steps to a Compassionate Life is one that I’d really like. It’s human nature to be rather self-centered, and, although I do volunteer and work in the community, a book like this could possibly help me to reach out more. Enjoy all of the reads!

      Hi Julie

My watch-word for this year is ‘mercy’ so I’m hoping that reading this book will make me a little bit nicer to the world around me!

      Thanks for visiting.

      Laura

  11. I love Librarything and Goodreads. I think I like Goodreads more for the groups. I got a Nook for Christmas and like it much more than I ever thought I would too.
